Neveah Youth Sports Act in California

AB 1467, the Neveah Youth Sports Act, will go into effect on January 1, 2027. This law requires that AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and training be made available at all youth sports practices and games. With this act, the safety of young athletes is expected to be significantly improved during activities that are meant to be fun.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes. It is reported that survival rates can increase by up to 70% when early intervention is provided. The AHA also highlights that having AEDs and training in CPR readily available is essential in saving lives. As a result of AB 1467, youth sports organizations will be required to implement these life-saving measures. This step is seen as critical in reducing risks associated with sudden cardiac events and ensuring that children are better protected during sports activities.
