Heart Attack vs. Cardiac Arrest

Do you know the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest? I didn’t, until I experienced cardiac arrest in the spring of 2023. After that, a lot of time was spent researching the difference. Both conditions are serious and need immediate medical help, but they are not the same.

A heart attack happens when the blood flow to the heart is blocked, usually by a blood clot. This can cause damage to the heart muscle, leading to chest pain, shortness of breath, or other signs. On the other hand, cardiac arrest happens when the heart stops beating completely due to electrical problems. This causes the person to lose consciousness and stop breathing.

Although a heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest, they have different causes and symptoms. Knowing the difference is important for recognizing and responding to these emergencies.
